Guide to Buying Bedding

What is difference between Allergy and Waterproof Bedding?

There are few main differences between allergy and waterproof bedding. It's important to know which type of protective bedding you'll need based on your situation. Allergy bedding is made of a specially designed fabric that is woven tightly so that dust mites and most of the allergens cannot pass through. This type of bedding still allows air and moisture through.

Waterproof bedding will better protect your mattress from spills and liquids. Much of the waterproof bedding also protects from allergens. The barrier layer, either vinyl or polyurethane, prevents the passage of dust mites from the mattress. What is an Encasement and When Would I Need One?

An encasement is a protective layer that covers the entire mattress. An encasement protects your mattress, from spills, dust, and mold. The entire mattress and box springs should be covered if you goal is to prevent allergies.

How Do I Effectively Protect My Room from Allergens?

You should do any or all of these things to help protect your room from allergens:

  • If possible, remove carpet from the bedroom; dust mites grow rapidly in soft warm carpeting. Bedroom floors should be hardwood, tile or linoleum instead of carpet.
  • Encase all bedding- mattresses, box springs and pillows- in zippered encasements.
  • Wash all bedding materials, including pillow cases, sheets, blankets and mattress pads at least twice a month in hot water over 130 degrees.
  • A regularly washed fitted cover is more effective against allergens than a zippered cover that is only washed once or twice a year.
  • Reduce loose fabric from the bedroom such as wall hangings, curtains or drapes. When possible, use wood or plastic shades and blinds instead of cloth.
  • Foam rubber pillows and mattresses easily become moldy and should be avoided.

What is a Mattress Overlay and When Would I Need One?

A mattress overlay is a quilted absorbent waterproof pad that is placed on top of the sheets. Any nighttime accidents can be cleaned up quickly by removing the pad and replacing it with a clean one. The overlay pad is machine washed and dried in the morning. Overlays are useful for children, pets, elderly or anytime special areas need waterproof protection.

While a waterproof mattress pad is essential to protect the mattress, consider purchasing a waterproof mattress overlay your child can sleep on to absorb small to medium accidents. Overlays are quilted, soft pieces of fabric with a waterproof layer that protect the sheets from moisture. They come in different sizes to fit your bed. The saddle style mattress overlay, best suited for twin or full mattresses, has side flaps that tuck between your mattress and box spring to hold the pad in place. Mattress overlays can be machine washed and dried and can decrease the overall laundry load significantly.
