Zippered vinyl mattress encasements are inexpensive, effective and durable. Using encasements can extend the life of your mattresses 25-30%. They protect the mattress on all four sides from dust mites, bedbugs and fluids. Easily cleaned between users with a disinfectant, they come in a variety of gauges (thicknesses) and sizes. Three, six and eight gauge thicknesses are available. Six gauge is the most popular for schools. Three gauge vinyl is less durable, but also more economical, while providing the protection that you need. In addition to the zippered vinyl covers, we carry skirted vinyl covers that protect 3 sides and are easily removed and replaced. These sell for only a few dollars each and are the least expensive option.
Bedbug infestations in the US are the highest they have been in the last 50 years. Prudent school administrators ward off this potential problem before it starts. Once a problem begins, the solution is to destroy the mattress or totally encase it with a zippered cover, often on an emergency basis. By having the mattress totally encased from the beginning, bedbugs aren’t able to live in the mattress, thus avoiding potential problems.
Another situation that schools frequently encounter is bedwetting. About 5% of school aged children suffer from bedwetting, posing a problem in dormitories. Having an intact waterproof mattress protector is essential to protect your mattress and preserve the students’ self-esteem. Vinyl covers provide a complete waterproof barrier but are not breathable and may not be as comfortable to sleep on as breathable products. Using an absorbent mattress pad over the vinyl or using a polyurethane encasement would add an extra measure of comfort. Polyurethane barrier encasements have a breathable waterproof layer, making them more comfortable for sleeping. They can be machine washed in hot water with other bedding and provide protection from dust mites and bedbugs. These carry a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty, and although more expensive initially, will provide more durability over the long run.
